I’ve looked at the goalkeepers, defenders and midfielders out of contract at Wednesday this summer, and now it’s the turn of the strikers. Again, we have several who could leave the club for free in around six months. However, it could be a blessing as we look to refresh and revamp our attacking unit.
Steven Fletcher, 32, is a man bang in form right now. The Scot has four goals in his last two outings, taking his tally to ten for the season. Since joining us on a free transfer in 2016, Fletcher has bagged thirty-five goals and eight assists.
Fletcher is one of our most important players currently, and as well as weighing in with goals this season, his ability to lead the line has been crucial. If he carries on in the same vein of form, he’ll undoubtedly have an offer on the table. Although, it’s likely to be on reduced terms.
What we need is someone who can play alongside Fletcher ideally, rather than a replacement for the former Sunderland man. However, I think it’s worth seeing if we can find someone younger in the same mould as Fletch if possible.
I include Fernando Forestieri in the striker’s piece, as this is where he prefers to play. The Argentinian is undoubtedly a player who can change a game for us, even now. However, he’s only recently forced himself into Garry Monk’s thinking and is now out injured.
The outlook doesn’t look great when it comes to Forestieri’s chances of staying here. I get the impression that Monk isn’t convinced on him so far, and he could be considering other options.
I think Forestieri is useful when playing left in a three. However, Monk likes to play the margins and demands his players work hard, and there have been questions when it comes to Forestieri in this area. So, it could be the end of the road for the 29-year-old.
Atdhe Nuhiu, 30, is a player who continues to divide opinion in the fan base. At present, he’s the man Garry Monk turns to when pairing a striker with Steven Fletcher. Since joining us from Rapid Vienna in 2013, Nuhiu has always been in and around it and has forced himself into the picture under Monk.
I think you need a minimum of four strikers in your squad, so, Nuhiu’s future will likely depend on what happens in terms of business in and out. I mentioned how it might be worth recruiting a younger player similar to Fletcher, and if this is achievable, it could be time to part ways with Nuhiu.
Sam Winnall has unfortunately never been able to make himself a regular starter since joining from Barnsley, and he’s in and out of the matchday squad this season. So, the signs don’t look good regarding his future here.
Winnall has proven himself capable of scoring goals at this level and is undoubtedly a player who will want to be out there playing, so, a move away could come in January. I think it will be ideal if we can get a small fee for the 28-year-old, and he will no doubt be eager to get away to kick start his career.
If Winnall is still with us in the summer, I can’t see a new deal being on the table, as I don’t think it will be the right decision for him or Sheffield Wednesday. It’s worth bearing in mind Jordan Rhodes has a deal until 2021, and at present, he’s perhaps more in favour than Winnall.
